Do dental office visits make you nervous? Do you feel anxious before or during dental treatments? For patients who have dental fears, Dr. Pape, Dr. Ramjit and our team may recommend sedation dentistry in Key West, Florida. Sedation dentistry is the use of medication to help fearful patients relax during dental treatments.
There are different levels of dental sedation. Minimal sedation causes patients to relax, but the patients are still awake. Moderate sedation may result in a patient slurring speech and not remembering much of the dental treatment. Deep sedation puts patients on the edge of consciousness, but they can still be woken up easily. A patient is completely unconscious with general anesthesia (which is a hospital procedure).
One of the types of dental sedation is nitrous oxide or laughing gas. Our dentists will place a small mask over your nose, and you will breathe the nitrous oxide that is mixed with oxygen. This will help you feel comfortable and relaxed. Nitrous oxide wears off quickly and you will be able to drive yourself home after treatment. If you choose oral sedation, our dentists may have you take a prescribed medication before your dental procedure; this will cause minimal to moderate sedation and you will not be able to drive.
